Dear Panther Family,
I was honored to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Georgia State’s Computer Science Department. Starting from humble beginnings in 1999, the department launched into the new millennium with a group of enthusiastic students, faculty, and staff. The department soon became the thriving technology hub that it is today.
One of the key pillars of our strategic plan, Blueprint to 2033, is “Beyond College to Career” which is all about effectively preparing our students for their chosen careers. To provide students with access to gain experiential learning experiences, the department has partnered with many companies such as CodePath, UPS, and Delta. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in both Computer Science and Data Science, Master of Science degrees in Computer Science and Data Science and Analytics, a Ph.D. in Computer Science, and undergraduate certificates.
The department also offers a new initiative called “RISE in Computing”, which stands for “Reaching for Inclusion, Striving for Excellence” in Computing. This initiative supports two distinct programs: RISE Scholars, aimed at juniors and seniors majoring in computing, and RISE Stars, designed for freshmen in computer science. These programs have already impacted over 130 students.
Looking forward, the Computer Science department will launch CS + X program next fall 2025. The goal of this program is to invite students from all walks of life and from various undergraduate majors, to take “bridge course modules” in computer science. Once a student completes these modules, they will be eligible to apply to the Master’s in Computer Science program. With this new program, the goal is to create strong ties to the Atlanta community and beyond in an effort to broaden participation in computing.
As a computer scientist, I’m so excited about the future of the GSU Computer Science department and the new innovations the department will produce. GSU’s Computer Science department will continue to prepare students to lead the way in a rapidly changing digital world. Happy 25th Anniversary to the GSU Department of Computer Science!
All the best,
