Dear Panther Family,
As you know, the safety of our community is our university’s absolute top priority. In recent months we have funded millions of dollars in improvements and made strides to make our Atlanta Campus safer. Our administration has also continued to work very closely with our partners across the city – the mayor’s office, Atlanta Police, public and private organizations, business leaders and residential housing owners to collectively make change. It is an ongoing and sustained effort.
Our university’s urban location is one of our greatest assets as our students are availed of valuable experiential learning opportunities and visible career pathways. However, it can also present challenges as we share our streets and spaces.
This weekend, I was horrified to hear a report that two windows in the University Commons were broken by random gunfire. Thankfully, no students were hurt and our GSUPD responded immediately and followed our regular protocols. The shots appeared to have originated from the highway, and there was no ongoing threat to campus so an emergency notification was not prompted. University Housing and Student Victim Assistance reached out quickly to impacted students to provide immediate support. We are working with APD, Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Department of Transportation to review camera footage and continue our investigation. There is no ongoing threat, but at the end of the day, this is simply an unacceptable incident, and we are committed to keeping you informed and updated.
Please visit the campus operations website to learn more about our comprehensive plan to enhance the campus experience Resources for students can always be found here. Our administration is scheduled to meet with the Student Government Association leadership in the coming days and I welcome your feedback as well. Please don’t hesitate to share your ideas.
